Talk to Urban Folk and Jazz artist KJ Denhert for a few minutes about her June 11 performance at Garcia’s, which is adjacent to the legendary Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, and you’ll get the sense of just how special this upcoming gig is for her. A native of the city, she recalls living and breathing music on Main Street. “A lot of great music was made and played,” she said. As a matter of fact, it was in PC where the self-taught guitarist purchased her favorite guitar ever, a little nylon string Ibanez, at the music store Palumbos Music.

Palumbos Music is long gone as is the Common Sense Cafe (“lots of people came through there”), but Denhert revels in the musical revitalization The Cap and Garcia’s has recently brought back to the city. “What a trip to come back and bring my band,” she said.

Going strong since her 1999 debut “Looking Forward to Looking Back,” the well-traveled Denhert (everywhere from Egypt to Italy) is currently touring in support of her tenth album, “Destiny.” She is currently nominated for four Independent Music Awards, of which she’s won in previous years, and won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in 2012.
